Prince Michael International Road Safety Award
PC Chris Smith has been a Police Officer for over 26 years with nearly 20 years in the Traffic Department as a Police Motorcyclist. Chris is a qualified Police driving and riding instructor, teaching advanced skills to officers locally and heads up the force Motorcycle VIP team having escorted HM the Queen on several occasions. In 2003 he started Dorset BikeSafe and took over the running of Poole Quay Bike Night for the Police with the aim of reducing the number of bikers being killed and injured whilst attending the event. His success in reducing this risk by 90% saw the event becoming the first in the UK to receive the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
Passion to reduce biker deaths
Working with Dr Ian Mew allowed him to add Trauma care to the Dorset BikeSafe scheme as Chris is the first to admit that Ian knows a lot more than he does when it comes to patient care. As the demand increased, the team have brought the BikerDown course into Dorset to meet this need. An examiner and mentor for the IAM, his passion and aim are to reduce biker deaths and make the roads safer for everyone through education and improving rider and driver skills. When not riding at work, Chris is often to be found touring across Europe and further afield having ridden in New Zealand and Canada to name a few places.
